Parents decorate son’s grave with skeleton, cemetery yanks it

You'd think cemetery caretakers would appreciate a little graveyard humor.

A New Hampshire couple thought they'd tickle grave-goers' funny bones by erecting a Halloween skeleton display at the headstone of their deceased son. Unfortunately, the cemetery owners might've not found their gallows gag nearly as amusing as they promptly removed the decoration without notice.

Rob and Christina Wohle of Francestown, NH, lost their son Cole three years ago to a heart attack he suffered during a rodeo event, reports Fox8 Live. However, rather than let his death get them down, they decided to honor the 18-year-old's "dark sense of humor" by helping him "live beyond the grave."

So they set up a "post-humorous" display at Cole's gravesite in the Francestown Cemetery. The hilarious decoration depicted a faux skeleton appearing to claw its way from Cole's grave. And it even sported a cowboy hat in honor of their late son's love of horseback riding.

"Cole would've loved that," said Christina, who hoped the gag would "brighten people's day just by [them] walking by and seeing it and chuckling."

Her husband seconded her sentiment: "It was just something to really remember him by and kind of help bring a smile down there cause it's always tears when we come down…and sadness."

Unfortunately, the Francestown Cemetery Commission had the display torn down without contacting the couple. Chairman Polly Reese claimed that the plastic bones interfered with the weekly landscaping, adding that the commission had the right to remove any decoration they saw fit, reports Union Leader.

Christina wasn't having it: "There's nothing to mow," she protested, noting that her son's grave had no grass on it, and that the graveyard hadn't been manicured since the middle of September.

Cole's mom felt the removals were especially heavy-handed since the "other people who have loved ones buried out here had no problem with it."

"If the neighbors had a problem with it, we would've absolutely taken it down," said her husband.

The couple even tried to resurrect the skeleton display two more times, but the commission kept removing it, so eventually, they gave up.

Fortunately, the social media masses are clearly siding with the Wohles, with many posting on Christina's Facebook page: "I can't believe they are being such asses," and "I'm sorry you have to go through something so childish."

"You should be allowed to celebrate the life of your loved one in any way you see fit," said one sympathizer.
